Day 1

Scripture to Read: Psalm 13:1

There are times in all our lives when we feel distant from God. Several different things can cause the distance. If we have been out of daily fellowship with our Lord and being in His Word, then we will feel very far away from God. If we are going through a major test or trial and allow our circumstances to rob us of our joy and peace in Christ, then we will feel distant from God. If we have willingly committed sin and thereby turned our backs on our Lord, then we will feel distant from Him. Sometimes, the distance we feel comes because we are walking through a spiritual battle with the spiritual forces of wickedness, and they are whispering the lies that God really does not care about us (Ephesians 6:10–18). Whatever the case might be, everyone has felt that distance from our Lord. As David felt that distance from our Lord, he cried out to God in Psalm 13. Here is what we first read in Psalm 13:1, “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” David first asks God how long he would have to endure whatever he was facing. We can always ask God anything, including asking Him for a timeline so we can see the light at the end of the tunnel we feel like we are in. God never gets upset with us asking, though sometimes He may not give us the answer we want. What we know we can do is trust Him no matter what.

Day 2

In Psalm 13, it’s incredibly obvious that the distance David felt from God was strong. David asked two other questions of God in Psalm 13:1, “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” For David to ask God if He had forgotten him shows that David was at a very low point in his life. We may get to ...

Day 2

God is so gracious toward us as His children, and we see the graciousness of God as He allowed David to ask Him more questions as David was spiritually hurting. God allowed David to ask in Psalm 13:2, “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?” David asked God h...

Day 4

David sought the Lord in the midst of his suffering instead of cursing the Lord or turning away from the Lord. As David continued to pray, he said in Psalm 13:3, “Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death.” Too many people, when facing the struggles in life, will often turn away from our Lord...

Day 5

God gave David the freedom to share his heart. This should encourage us, for if God used David to pen the words as we’ve seen in Psalm 13, we can know that God wants us to be honest with Him no matter how we feel. Though we covered part of Psalm 13:3 in yesterday’s devotion, we come back to it as we examine Psalm 13:3–4, “Consider and answer ...

Day 6

We’ve seen in Psalm 13 that David went through a tough time, and he shared his heart with God. If we had stopped with Psalm 13:4, we would not have had the privilege of seeing the hope that David had in the midst of his suffering. God had David pen these words in Psalm 13:5, “But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice i...

Day 7

Though David, as He wrote Psalm 13, was going through a tough time, he ends this Psalm by reminding us what we must do. God had David write in Psalm 13:6, “I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” David chose to sing praises to our Lord. As a Christian, choosing to sing is not an option because it’s a command from o...
