Day 5

Scripture to Read: John 2:17

As we have examined John 2 so far, it is interesting that after Jesus drove the religious leaders and the animals out of the temple that God had John write this in John 2:17, “His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for Your house will consume me.’” This is a quote from Psalm 69:9, “For zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.” What a great testimony of the culture in the day of Christ. In Avot 5 (from the Mishnah, the rabbinical commentary added to the Old Testament), we learn of the ancient Jewish education traditions. It tells us that Scripture study began at age 5 for every Jewish young man. Then, the study of the Mishnah began at age 10. Then, at age 13, a Hebrew young man was held accountable to live according to the obligations in the Torah. Continued rabbinical study began at the age of 14 or 15 for Hebrew young men who were chosen to be tutored by a formal teacher. Jesus was the disciples formal teacher, and He chose these young men to follow Him. Because of what the disciples had been taught in their homes, they knew Psalm 69:9 and were reminded that this was a prophecy about their Messiah. What a great reminder as to why we must be in God’s Word daily. It’s also a reminder to all parents that it’s our responsibility to teach our children God’s Word so they are prepared for this world and all that it will throw at them.

Challenge & Application

• When you consider what the Hebrew young men were taught, starting at age 5, how have things changed in today’s culture? • What must we do to make sure we are growing in God’s Truth and making sure we’re prepared for the world we live in?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Our Lord Jesus Christ, while living here on earth, knew the incredible importance of the Passover. And, of course, He would since He is God. As a reminder for us, the Passover was established by God in Exodus 12. God taught Moses and Aaron how to prepare for the Passover. Moses and Aaron then taught the people of Israel how to prepare so they...

Day 2

Every Jew coming to the Passover would bring a sacrificial lamb to the temple. Everyone knew what God had commanded, and they knew there was no forgiveness for their sins without the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22). The problem was that the temple priests would take advantage of the Jews coming to Jerusalem to observe the Passover. The templ...

Day 3

Be sure to reread John 2:14–17 today. We see how God’s temple was being used, not for worship but as a place of business. Today, though, God’s temple is our body. God led Paul to ask this question in 1 Corinthians 3:16, Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? We also read in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20...

Day 4

Many people question Christ’s actions since our Lord made a whip (“a scourge of cords,” John 2:15) to drive the religious leaders who were using the temple for a place of business out of the temple. What we must know is that God’s anger is always righteous. The problem is that 99.9% of our anger is not righteous. God warns us in His Word abou...

Day 6

The Jews who watched Jesus drive the religious leaders out of the temple that day began to question Him. We read in John 2:18–22, “The Jews then said to Him, ‘What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?’ 19 Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20 The Jews then said, ‘It took ...

Day 7

God had John also share this in John 2:23–25, “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself kn...
