Day 2

Scripture to Read: John 2:3–4

In Jesus’ day, probably even more so than today, the wedding celebration was an incredibly important part of the wedding. We read in John 2:3–4, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus *said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’” In David Guzik’s commentary, it is noted that to run out of wine “This was a major social mistake and could shame the couple for a long time. A wedding was supposed to be the best party of all, and for a host to fail in providing adequate hospitality (partially in the form of food and drink) was a great dishonor.” So, this would have been a major problem for the newlywed couple. The fact that Jesus’ mother came to Jesus to tell Him alludes to the fact that she knew her Son was the Messiah. Surely Mary remembered the words spoken to her by the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:31–33, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” We must come to Jesus for our every need, for He alone meets our needs and does far beyond all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20–21).

Challenge & Application

• When unexpected things take place in your life, how do you usually handle them and why? • We see that Mary, Jesus’ mother, came to Him to ask for His help; so, how do you approach Jesus in times of need?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, as recorded in the Book of John. We read in John 2:1–2, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.” Jesus, His disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) were all part of this wedding celebration...

Day 3

When Jesus addressed Mary in John 2:4, He said, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” Most people today would say this sounds disrespectful, but we must understand the culture of Jesus’ day. Most commentators agree on this point—that what Jesus said to Mary was a term of respect. We don’t have any word in the E...

Day 4

We read in John 2:5–8, “His mother *said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, ‘Draw so...

Day 5

As we continue our walk through the Book of John, we read in John 2:9–10, “When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, ‘Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have ...

Day 6

Many Christians have tried to say that what Jesus made was not really wine but grape juice. The problem with that line of thought is that we have to change God’s Word. The reason Christians today feel like it could not be wine is due to the way wine is made today. But, when we study the culture of Christ’s day, it is not the same as today. Sp...

Day 7

In John 2:11–12, we read this: “This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.” According to God’s Word, Jesus had just performed His first mir...
