Scripture to Read: Luke 10:41
Jesus was rebuked by Martha and then Martha actually told Jesus to tell Mary to help her. Jesus is so incredibly compassionate and kind. Jesus could have very easily rebuked Martha on the spot, but He didn’t. God had Luke record this in Luke 10:41, “But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things.’” Jesus lovingly pointed out to Martha that she was “worried and bothered about so many things.” Note that Jesus didn’t say that Martha was worried and bothered about critical issues, life-altering decisions, or eternal/transformational decisions. Jesus said Martha was worried and bothered about things. No doubt, at the moment when Martha confronted Jesus, she thought that what she was asking was right on point, but her emotions had gotten in the way of her seeing clearly. Jesus wanted Martha to see that the things she thought were most important had actually become a distraction for her, for she allowed those things to get her all worried and bothered. In this life, things happen, and some things we have control over and some things we don’t. We must all make daily decisions and some are more important than others. Jesus does not want us to allow things to distract us from what He’s called us to do. If we’re worried and bothered by things, we need to ask ourselves whether those things have become a distraction from pursuing Christ and His Word. We must evaluate what has our greatest attention and why, for it may be keeping us from what’s best.
