Day 7

Scripture to Read: Luke 5:10b–11

When anyone finally realizes that Jesus is God, that He came to earth to die for mankind by sacrificing His own life as the Perfect sacrifice for sins, and also taking on Himself the full wrath/judgment of God to pay the full price for the sins of all mankind, that is when they are ready and willing to follow Him as Lord and Savior. Simon, Andrew, James, and John had seen enough through the miracle Jesus had carried out in their presence. God had Luke record this in Luke 5:11, “When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.” There was no question in those young men’s minds; they knew Jesus was who they needed to follow. We also need to remember what Jesus said to Simon, and of course, the others would have heard this as well, that Jesus told Simon, “from now on you will be catching men.” This is the call Jesus places on everyone who surrenders to Him as Lord. Jesus has told us in Matthew 28:19–20 that as we are going, we must be leading others to Him so that they know and follow Him as Lord. Jesus also told us in Acts 1:8 that He would give us His Holy Spirit so that we would be empowered by Him to carry out His command to tell others about Him and lead them to Him. Simon and the others were ready to follow, and they left everything else behind. We must also willingly die to the things of this world to follow our Lord.

Challenge & Application

Why were Simon, Andrew, James, and John willing to leave the stuff of this world to follow Jesus? How are you daily dying to the things of this world to walk in full obedience to our Lord?

Day 1

When we left off in Luke 4, Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. As we begin Luke 5, God had Luke record in Luke 5:1, “Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.” Jesus was drawing a crowd wherever He went. Jesus shared the Word of ...

Day 2

Jesus was not by the lake of Gennesaret by accident. Jesus knew who God the Father had chosen for Him to call as His first disciples. God had Luke record in Luke 5:2–3, “and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’...

Day 3

Jesus’s plan continues to unfold as God had Luke record in Luke 5:4–5, “When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’ 5 Simon answered and said, ‘Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.’” God did not have Luke reco...

Day 4

Since Simon was willing to obey the words of Jesus, he was abundantly blessed. God tells us in James 1:22–25, “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at h...

Day 5

When we recognize God’s handiwork in and through us as well as in others who belong to Him, it should always amaze us and leave us in complete awe of who He is as our God and King. This is what happened to Simon, Andrew, and the others who were fishing that day. God had Luke record in Luke 5:8–9, “But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down a...

Day 6

God had Luke then record who Simon’s companions were that day, as God had Luke record in Luke 5:10, “and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.’” Though Andrew is not mentioned in Luke 5:1–11, we know Andrew was there because God ...
