Scripture to Read: 1 Samuel 12:1–24
In 1 Samuel 12, we see how Samuel addressed the nation of Israel after Saul was anointed as king. Samuel pointed out to them his integrity and faithful service as a judge. Samuel also reminded the people that their demand for a king was a rejection of God, but God still granted their request despite their worldly mindset. Samuel reminded the people of God’s handiwork on behalf of the nation of Israel as God delivered them through the exodus from Egypt and how God used His judges (Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel) to show His consistent care for them. Samuel called the people to fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully with sincerity and truth, warning that if they and their king did evil, God would punish them, but if they repented and obeyed, God would restore them. Then, Samuel prayed and asked the Lord to send thunder and rain during the wheat harvest as a sign that what Samuel had spoken was from God. God answered and the people feared the Lord and acknowledged their sin in asking for a king. Samuel instructed the people to return home in peace and he committed to continue praying for them, urging them to fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully with all their hearts. We must serve our Lord wholeheartedly as well. Because of Christ our King, we receive the fullness of God’s grace and forgiveness. We must guard against following our fleshly desires by passionately pursuing our Lord and His Word daily. God’s blessing comes through obedience (Psalm 1:1–2, Matthew 7:24–29, Luke 11:28, James 1:25).
