Scripture to Read: 1 Kings 17:2–4
Around 500 years earlier, we read in Leviticus 26 that God made clear the penalties of disobeying Him and His Word. Specifically, God said this about the sky and land in Leviticus 26:19–20, “I will also break down your pride of power; I will also make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit.” Iron is an extremely hard metal, and the image God gave reveals a sky that would not yield rain. Bronze, another unyielding metal, indicated that the earth would become so hard that it would not be able to receive seed or produce crops—that is exactly what God had Elijah prophesy to King Ahab. But then, God gave a word to Elijah in 1 Kings 17:2–3, The word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 ‘Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.’” God assured Elijah that He was taking care of him. God chose a place for Elijah to go while the rest of the nation of Israel underwent the punishment of God for their sin. God provided both water and food for Elijah. God also has a plan for us, not just to feed us physically, but to nourish us spiritually. We must choose to obey Him and His plan for us.
