Day 7

Scripture to Read: Luke 13:34–35

Jesus was burdened for the Jews and grieved over the people of Jerusalem, as God had Luke record the following: Luke 13:34–35, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Anytime our Lord repeats a word in Scripture, it normally signifies a deep emotion that God has for a people or an individual. Jesus was broken for the people of Jerusalem, for too many of them had rejected Him as their Messiah up to this point in Scripture. Jesus also described their sins from their past, how they had killed the prophets of old and stoned to death the people God sent to them. Jesus had incredible compassion for the Jews and deeply wanted to protect them and take care of them just as a mother hen protects her young chicks. Jesus had been to Jerusalem many times before, as recorded in the Book of John, but they refused Him. Jesus stated that the Jewish people would ultimately welcome Him as their Messiah. God had Paul record in Romans 11:25–27 how after the fullness of the Gentiles has come in that “all Israel will be saved,” signifying that God is not finished with Israel.

Challenge & Application

Why was Jesus so burdened for the people of Jerusalem? How do we know that God is not done with Israel yet as His chosen nation?

Day 1

Jesus knew He had come to fulfill the Father’s perfect will (John 4:34, John 5:30, John 6:38) and part of that plan was to continue preaching the good news of the kingdom in every town and village (Matthew 4:23, Matthew 9:35, Luke 4:43). God had Luke record this in Luke 13:22, “And He was passing through from one city and village to another, ...

Day 2

Jesus had been asked if only a few would be saved, so God had Luke record Jesus’ answer in Luke 13:24, “And He said to them, 24 ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.’” Just as Jesus had already shared in Luke 9:23–24 about the cost of following Him, Jesus again declared that t...

Day 3

Jesus wanted those who were listening to Him, and for everyone today, to understand that there would come a time when the gift of salvation would no longer be available. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:25–27, “Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open u...

Day 4

Jesus talked more about hell than He did heaven. Jesus did not want those who were listening to Him, nor anyone today, to misunderstand that hell is a place of eternal torment. Jesus said in Luke 13:28, “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of Go...

Day 5

Jesus continued to describe a little bit of heaven as God had Luke record in Luke 13:29–30, “And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” People who surrender to Christ as Lord will come ...

Day 6

God gives us a little glimpse at some Pharisees who actually wanted to help protect Jesus. Too often, people think that all the Pharisees opposed Jesus, but that was not true. God had Luke record the following in Luke 13:31–33, “Just at that time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, ‘Go away, leave here, for Herod wants to kill You.’ 32 ...
