Scripture to Read: Luke 17: 35–37
Jesus finished with His disciples, as we read in Luke 17:35–37, “There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 [Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”] 37 And answering they *said to Him, ‘Where, Lord?’ And He said to them, ‘Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered.’” Jesus described a situation in which two people are working together but one is taken and the other is not. When Jesus comes back, the events will happen quickly and people will either be ready or they will not. Jesus emphasized that what comes next will not happen slowly over time, but it will be unexpected. Jesus again shares how people will be carrying out ordinary, everyday tasks yet they will be separated by whether they are prepared for His return. We must understand that the exact time Christ will return is impossible to predict. Jesus warned His disciples and us that when He does come back, it will be like a sudden shift from normal life to unshakable outcomes. Since His return will happen suddenly and without further warning, all of us must live on alert and ready rather than assume we have plenty of time. We must choose to live each day wholeheartedly for Christ. The disciples ask Jesus where this will happen, and Jesus suggests that the signs of the end will be noticeable, much like the sight of vultures alerts people to something dead nearby.
