Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 5:33–35

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day hated Him and sought every opportunity to accuse Him of breaking God’s commandments. The problem was that they had no idea they were accusing the very God who gave those commandments. God had Luke record in Luke 5:33–35, “And they said to Him, ‘The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.’ 34 And Jesus said to them, ‘You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? 35 But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.’” Jesus knew He would only be on earth for a short time. Jesus wanted the religious leaders to know that He is the head of His church; therefore, He is the bridegroom (Ephesians 5:25–27) and His followers are His bride. In Jesus’ day, a wedding feast was the most beautiful picture of joy and happiness. During the weeklong wedding feast, everyone knew that joy was more important than following religious rituals. If any ceremonial observance took away from the joy of the wedding feast, it was not required. Jesus said that His followers were to have this kind of joy and happiness. Jesus also knew that His time on earth would come to a close because He would be “taken away” by laying down His life for His bride. We know our Lord will one day return for His bride (the church) and we look forward to that day.

Challenge & Application

We can live with the joy of Christ in us and the knowledge that we’ll be with Him one day; so, how are you walking in that joy daily? How do you practice fasting and praying knowing that our Lord will return for His bride?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus continued His ministry throughout the region of Galilee, where about 85% of His public ministry took place. As Jesus was going from place to place, we find that God had Luke record the following in Luke 5:12–13, “While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face a...

Day 2

After Jesus had healed the man with leprosy; God had Luke record this in Luke 5:14–16, “And He ordered him to tell no one, ‘But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.’ 15 But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to h...

Day 3

Jesus’ ministry continued to marvel many, and often, people would do whatever it took to get their family and friends in front of Jesus just hoping He would be willing to heal them. God had Luke record the following in Luke 5:17–19, “One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come fro...

Day 4

Since we know the determination of the friends of the man with leprosy, we read this today in Luke 5:20–26, “Seeing their faith, He said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven you.’ 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, ‘Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?’ 22 But Jesus, aware of their re...

Day 5

At this point in Jesus’ life, He was still calling His disciples to follow Him. Historically, a rabbi of that time would typically begin taking on disciples at the age of thirty. It was at the age of thirty that Jesus began His public ministry. For those bright (or wealthy) enough, higher education meant studying under a local rabbi. If a rab...

Day 7

Jesus continued to use parables as He taught the religious leaders. We read in Luke 5:36–39, “And He was also telling them a parable: ‘No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wine...
