Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 1:70–72

God used Zacharias mightily to proclaim many things about our Lord Jesus Christ. We read in Luke 1:70–72, “As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old—71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 To show mercy toward our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant.” God used the prophets of old to tell of the coming Messiah, but even they did not know who He would be or when He would come. God tells us this in 1 Peter 1:10–12, “As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.” As God used His holy prophets, He wanted all to know that His plan of salvation would be fulfilled. There is no doubt that Jesus is the One who saves us from our enemies (Ephesians 6:10–18) and that through Him we have victory over our enemies. Also, Jesus came to show His mercy to all who surrender to Him as Lord. Jesus knows the covenant made with Abraham and He came to fulfill it.

Our Lord worked miraculously on behalf of Zacharias and Elizabeth. We read in Luke 1:57–58, “Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.” We need to remember that Elizabeth had ...

We read in Luke 1:59–63, “And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to he...

Day 3

Zacharias had shown a lack of faith in Luke 1:18–20, “Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behol...

Day 4

As we walk through the Book of Luke, we must remember that God had not used anyone to prophesy for 400 years but He had been silent. But as we have been reading through Luke 1, we have read how God spoke through Gabriel in Luke 1:13–17 and in Luke 1:28–36. Then, God filled Elizabeth with His Holy Spirit and spoke through her in Luke 1:42–45. ...

Day 6

As God continued to use Zacharias to prophesy, we read in Luke 1:73–75, “The oath which He swore to Abraham our father, 74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.” God made an oath to Abraham in Genesis 22:16–24 after Abraham was w...
