Scripture to Read: Luke 1:73–75
As God continued to use Zacharias to prophesy, we read in Luke 1:73–75, “The oath which He swore to Abraham our father, 74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.” God made an oath to Abraham in Genesis 22:16–24 after Abraham was willing to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice to God. God told Abraham, “I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Since there is no one greater than God, God swore by Himself. We read this in Hebrews 6:13, “For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself.” So, God’s promise is guaranteed, and He fulfilled that promise through Christ our Lord. Having been set free from the snare of the devil (2 Timothy 2:26), we have the privilege of serving our Lord daily by walking according to His Word. Note too in Luke 1:75 that we can serve our Lord through holiness and righteousness, for He has made us holy and righteous (1 Peter 2:9, Philippians 1:11, Philippians 3:9) through Christ in us. We have been given so much by our Lord; we must honor Him continually.
